The 2014 Digital Book World Conference & Expo is just days away and we are very excited this year as one of our favorite eBook projects from 2013 has been nominated for a Digital Book Award! Pizza Pilgrims, an interactive cookery book developed by HarperCollins NonFiction using iBooks Author, is a finalist in the ‘eBook Fixed Format/Enhanced – Adult Non-Fiction’ category.
Pizza Pilgrims was released in July 2013 and is a ground-breaking debut cookery book from authors and stars of the London street-food scene, Thom and James Elliot, a.k.a. The Pizza Pilgrims. The book contains 100 mouth-watering Italian recipes which all open as app-like interactive widgets giving readers everything they need to cook the delicious recipes and share their creations with others. The widget includes an ingredients list that can be checked and emailed, a scrollable method, sharing options (email, Twitter, Facebook and Evernote), notepad, timer, ratings, reward scheme and more.
- First widget-within-a-widget – the recipe widget incorporates 9 different functions into one widget, which gives the widget an app-like appearance and function. This means that the reader doesn’t have to leave the book to use several individual apps, such as a timer or shopping list.
- First tweets made directly from inside an iBooks Author book – readers are able to tweet the authors Thom and James directly, take a picture of their creation from inside the book itself and tweet it to their followers, or tweet a comment about any of the recipes.
- First widget-to-widget linking across a book – all widgets in the book are linked together so that the reader can build up a history of their interactions over time, which is then displayed on their ‘Profile’ page. The book is also the first to incorporate an in-book rewards scheme for readers, so that the more they interact with the book the more rewards they receive, which in this case is free pizza (the physical kind that you can actually eat!).
Award winners will be announced at the 2014 Digital Book World Conference & Expo Gala Dinner on January 14 at the Sheraton Hotel & Towers in New York City. Rhys and Susan from Bookry will be attending the conference and dinner next week and would be delighted to meet up with anyone who’d like to learn more about the ground-breaking technology behind Pizza Pilgrims, or any of our other interactive eBook services, such as our new InDesign to iBooks Author conversion tool and ‘Story Widget’ for creating fully interactive/animated children’s books using iBooks Author (as used in David Walliams’ Slightly Annoying Elephant eBook). Please email firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange a meeting.
